Traveling to Art-Filled “Mural Towns”

You can always go to a museum or gallery to get your art fix, but what about visiting something called a “mural town” where art is literally out on the streets?

In Lake Placid, Florida, there are 42 murals covering the walls of office buildings, even garbage cans.

The murals were created by local artists and some images tell the history of Lake Placid, while others focus on the town’s eco-system and conservation issues.

In the artsy town of Chico, 40 murals liven up the area with scenes of pop culture, history, or just plain whimsy.

The 13 murals in Pine Bluff, Arkansas were started in 1992 to help revitalize the downtown area.

And last but not least, Twentynine Palms in Southern California is mostly known as the gateway to Joshua Tree National Park, but it’s also an oasis of murals.

Twenty-one of them provide a look into town’s pioneer history, desert wildlife, and the accomplishments of past residents.
