Great Trips for Train Fans

Locations in this article:  Brooklyn, NY New York City, NY

Attention all railroad fans and “train nerds!” If watching the trains roll by is your thing, then do I have some experiences for you.

For starters, there’s the unlikely destination of Folkston, Georgia. This tiny tunnel has a double track called “The Folkston Funnel.”

It’s a main track for trains traveling to and from Florida.

And locals built a viewing platform to watch dozens of passenger and freight trains go by everyday.

For more unofficial viewing areas around the country, just check out the website railfan.net, which has links to rail enthusiasts’ sites.

And if you’re really into trains, well, maybe you’re into subways.

The New York City Transit Museum is one of the cooler resources out there.

It’s located in Brooklyn, in a decommissioned subway station.

Even better, the museum offers experiences like riding vintage cars from Grand Central to the Bronx Zoo or visiting the Long Island Maintenance Shop for Commuter Trains.

Remember, I told you this is one for the train nerds.
