Alternative Spring Break Vacations and Voluntourism Summers For Students

Spring break is just around the corner, and if you’re the parent of a student, you know what that means. So why not have your child try a different kind of spring or summer break … healthier one that will let you rest a little easier at night.

The American Hiking Society actually has something called “alternative spring break.”

They’ll work a full day doing everything from weeding and planting trees, to rerouting entire trail sections.

Best of all, these volunteer vacations are affordable—about $245 including food, lodging or camping.

The National Outdoor Leadership School offers one of the leading wilderness education programs, where students can learn outdoor technical skills and environmental ethics.

Although trips can last as long as a semester, the school also has shorter two-week trips in the spring and summer.

The Student Conservation Association offers alternative spring breaks and local weekend programs from cleaning graffiti in the Grand Canyon to cleanups along the Appalachian trail.
