High Tech Travel Help for the Hearing Impaired

Locations in this article:  New York City, NY

If you know someone who has difficulty hearing you know it can be a challenge for them to hear tour guides or public address announcements. But, these days there are some great options out there for travelers with hearing loss.

New York Botanical Gardens just added something called an induction loop to its tram tour, which transmits broadcast sound wirelessly into most hearing aids.

As induction loops become more common they are starting to appear at public places, like the Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids Michigan, and even New York City taxicabs.

But be sure to ask about other sound amplification devices on your travels.

At the U.S. Capitol, devices are available through an FM broadcast system, which can be used for the capitol tour or even to listen to committee hearings.

Even most national parks have free listening devices that are available upon advanced request.

Don’t limit your travels because your dealing with a challenge, chances are there is a solution available if you ask the right questions.
