Airlines’ New Luggage Shipping Service: Is it Worth It?

You may already know that I’m a big fan of shipping your luggage ahead of time, especially now that the airlines are charging to check bags.

Don’t you all remember a time when the airlines would lose our bags for free?

Well get this, now United Airlines is offering to FedEx your luggage for you. But is it a good deal?

The new partnership between United and FedEx offers door-to-door overnight delivery of luggage within the continental U.S.

You can drop off your luggage at a Fedex location or schedule a pick up, so there’s no schlepping your bags to and from the airport.

The cost is $149 each way, for up to 50 pounds and less than 1000 miles.

This is not a good idea. Why? Because when I tell people to ship their bags ahead of time, I’m talking about four or five days in advance using either UPS or FedEx ground.

Then it’s about $50 to do it and it’s still waiting for you at your hotel room when you get there.

And remember – when you’re coming home, your dirty laundry does not have to be there by 10:30 in the morning. Trust me on this!
