Online Services for Getting Lost Items Back

There’s a big risk of losing valuable items while on the road. But if a Good Samaritan happens to find your goods, there are now services that can help you get your items back.

The way these companies work is that they give you a label with a unique ID number for your valuables and a link to their Web site.

You can attach the ID tag to any valuable items, like a cell phone, suitcase, laptop or a passport.

If someone finds your item with the label, they can contact the company to get the item back to you.

One service is called TrackItBack.com, which claims to return more than 85 percent of lost items, usually within 24 hours.

When someone finds your lost item, TrackItBack will arrange to have the item retrieved and shipped to you at no cost.

Another company called Boomerangit.com offers ID tags for about the same price, but usually charges owners the shipping and handling fees to get your item back.

A new service called SendMeHome.com offers ID tags for even less, starting at $2.95 each.

But the drawback here is that they don’t cover the shipping—that’s up to you and the person who finds your lost goods.
