Five Lies The Airlines Will Tell You

Airport signIt’s an open secret that airlines aren’t exactly forthcoming with information about delays, cancellations and other problems.

In a segment called “Five Things Your Airline Won’t Tell You,” Peter tells CNBC’s Carmen Wong Ulrich about the biggest fibs the airlines are peddling.

Find out what these whoppers are …

Unfortunately, the clip’s not embeddable, so click here to watch it. We’ve summarized the lies below …

1) Departure Boards Lie

Departure boards are notorious for not showing the correct information. Don’t believe them and you’ll be a lot better off.

2) If Nothing’s Arriving At Your Gate, You’re Not Leaving

This is the secret to avoid being tricked by the departure board. Once you know your gate, check the arrivals board. If there aren’t any planes set to pull up to your gate anytime soon, you know you’re likely to have a long wait ahead of you.

3) Direct Does Not Mean Non-Stop

“Direct” means that you could be stopping. You’ll stay on the same plane, sure, but you’re still making a stop, which opens you up to the possibility of more delays.

4) ‘Legal’ Connection Doesn’t Give You Enough Time

The ‘legal’ connection time may be 45 minutes, but actually trying to make this connection is “suicidal.” You’ll need 90 minutes to two hours in order to be able to make your connection–and just as importantly, for your bags to make it.

5) Airlines Will Not Directly Deliver Your Luggage

As with many things, the work of delivering your bag to you has been subcontracted out by the airlines. Work the subcontractor by getting the name of the folks at the airport baggage claim area, not the people on the airline’s 800 number, who are located hundreds, if not thousands of miles away.
