Pet Travel Laws

Locations in this article:  Denver, CO

If you’re on the road with your pet, it’s important to know that some states and cities have strict regulations regarding dogs. It pays to know the rules so that you and Fido don’t end up breaking the law.

Going to a national park? In Yosemite, for example, dogs are required to be leashed at all times and they are only allowed on paved trails and in campgrounds.

At Yellowstone, dogs are only allowed in front country areas, not the backcountry.

And, if you’re traveling with so-called “dangerous” breeds, like pit bulls and Rottweilers, keep in mind that several destinations have strict laws about them, too.

In Santa Monica, California, and Akron, Ohio, pit bulls have to be leashed and muzzled in public. Des Moines, Iowa, bans Rottweilers altogether.

Denver, Colorado, bans pit bull terriers and requires that you actually have a transit permit, even if you are just driving through with a pit bull in the car.

One last tip: although the U.S. doesn’t require that dogs be restrained in the car, common sense says that you’ve got to do it.
