Tips on Tipping Around the World

The rules on tipping are often confusing and change with each country. Here’s where tipping is encouraged, and where it’s a cultural no-no.

In most European restaurants, the tip is included in your bill, but a few extra euros are appreciated for great service.

In South America, gratuity is often included, but more so in establishments that cater to foreigners.

When you’re traveling through Asia, things get complicated.

In Singapore, tipping is not only frowned upon, but it’s outlawed at Changi Airport.

Tipping is not common in Korea and Japan, but the staff in upscale restaurants and hotels will probably expect some gratuity.

But if you’re vacationing in Bali, get ready to take your wallet for practically every service.

If you’re not sure of the local customs, check with your concierge … just don’t forget, you may have to thank him with cash.
